The first deaf woman to lead a United States college or university, and the first deaf woman to lead a school for the Deaf in the United States, Dr. Jane K. Fernandes has been serving as the president of Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, since 2014. An advocate for diversity, inclusion, and equity, Dr. Jane K. Fernandes focuses on creating inclusive ecosystems in education at all levels.
According to UNICEF, an estimated 93 million children live with disabilities worldwide. Children with disabilities often have limited access to quality education and are overlooked in policymaking and treated with discrimination. Inclusive education allows all students to be in the same schools and classrooms and offers the same opportunities to those with and without disabilities as well as speakers of other languages.
Inclusive excellence values the unique contributions of children from every background. It can be implemented gradually through the understanding, acceptance, and inclusion of diverse students. One of the main principles of inclusive education is making all students feel welcome, supported, and challenged . An inclusive educational system increases achievement among all students.
