About Jane K Fernandes

The first woman to serve as the president of Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, a school with an entirely hearing student body, Jane K. Fernandes, Ph.D., uses a combination of speech, speechreading, and American Sign Language with interpreters to communicate with the campus community. Between 2008-2014, she presided over the University of North Carolina Asheville as its provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. As such, Dr. Jane K. Fernandes managed enrollment, professional development, and evaluation for more than 200 faculty members.

Her academic appointment aside, Dr. Jane K. Fernandes has given addresses at Rochester Institute of Technology and The University of Kansas Medical Center. In 2016, she traveled to Birmingham, England, to attend the annual conference of the Friends Association for Higher Education at Woodbrooke.

In her free time, Dr. Fernandes enjoys gardening and walking on the beach at Sesuit Harbor in East Dennis, Massachusetts. An avid reader, she particularly enjoys stories of individuals who have used their disabilities to fuel creativity. Her favorite titles include The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby and Midstream by Helen Keller.
